Designed with a narrow floor plate, the building provides all interior spaces with a maximum of daylighting, ventilation, and views to the surrounding campus. The “L” plan in relation to the surrounding buildings creates a new outdoor quadrangle on campus. Home to one of the fastest growing departments at UPEI, the School of Nursing is designed to accommodate a new Master of Nursing Program and an accelerated learning class. The five teaching laboratories each have state of the art computerized teaching mannequins and equipment to record student response and performance in clinical scenarios. Also housing the Department of Family and Nutrition, the design includes two complete level laboratories for academic research, commercial kitchen and dining facilities as well as six fully equipped teaching kitchens in an interconnected classroom setting. Connecting the three floors is a large social atrium with a sculptural staircase. Designed with a high performance building envelope and high performance mechanical and electrical systems that respond to environmental and occupancy loads, the building is energy efficient and inexpensive to operate.
